WHY DO NEW CARS NEED DETAILING?

To Remove Embedded Contaminants

Most vehicles travel several thousands of miles before they arrive at the dealership and this process can take several months. During which time, the vehicles are sat outside getting exposed to bird droppings, mineral deposits and iron fallout (particularly if they are transported by rail which many vehicles are).

These contaminants bond to the paintwork causing it to feel rough, and are not removed during the regular wash process.

To address these contaminants, the car is treated to chemical and physical decontamination using a clay bar.

To Address Paint Defects

Unfortunately, brand-new cars almost always have clear coat defects (scratches) which are present even before you collect it from the dealership. These can either be inflicted when the dealership wash the vehicle, or at the factory.

An enhancement machine polish is required to remove these scratches and swirl marks, leaving the paintwork looking ultra-glossy. Exactly how a new vehicle should actually look!

To Protect the Finish

To lock in the finish and keep it looking fresh for years to come, a 7-year ceramic coating (Performance PPL Reign) is applied to the paint, glass, trim, exhaust and alloy faces. The interior is also treated to a leather sealant and 12-month interior plastic and vinyl coating.

These coatings help make the vehicle easier to maintain and keep it cleaner between washes. They also reduce contamination build-up by shielding the surfaces from the environment.

DEALERSHIP PROTECTION VS PROFESSIONAL DETAILER SERVICES

When you place an order for a new vehicle (or a used one), the sales person will typically offer you a “Dealership Protection Package”. Whilst this may look similar to a service provided by a professional detailer, in the vast majority of cases it is far from the same.

The dealership valeters are under immense pressure to prepare vehicles for sale incredibly quickly. Unfortunately this means that they often use improper wash techniques (e.g. skipping the pre-wash stage) and cheap tools (e.g. sponges and brushes) to get the vehicle on the road as soon as possible. The result, is the infliction of scratches and swirl marks which can only be removed by polishing the paintwork.

The protection that is applied is also often very poor quality. Although it may have a long durability guarantee or wild claims, I can’t tell you the amount of times that I have detailed vehicles which have been treated with the dealership’s lifetime protection package, only to see that there is in-fact no protection whatsoever on the vehicle just a few months later.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD?

Instead of opting for this overpriced dealership incentive, choose a professional detailer who has the experience and skills to protect prepare your new vehicle. It’s also vital that you tell the dealership NOT to wash the vehicle before you collect it, and ideally that they also keep the wrappings on it to ensure this request is met. You may be met with a funny look but I have personally done this several times and it’s a completely reasonable thing to ask. This ensures that scratches are not inflicted at the dealership and keeps the paintwork in better condition.

NEW CAR DETAILING IN CHESHIRE

I know just how important it is to you that your new vehicle is treated with the highest level of care. The New Car Detail package involves several stages and uses the highest quality chemicals and tools to ensure that your vehicle is only ever treated to the very best. Here’s a slider to show the all the key steps involved.

STEP 1. EXTERIOR WASH

The car is firstly washed using safe-techniques and premium shampoos and microfiber wash mitts. This includes a thorough clean of the entire wheel surface (arches, alloy barrels/ faces and tyres), a two-stage pre-wash and hand-wash.

STEP 2. DECONTAMINATION

To remove embedded contamination and leave the paintwork completely smooth, the car is chemically decontaminated using iron remover, tar remover, and mineral deposit remover sprays. It then receives a clay bar treatment to remove any remaining bonded contaminants.

STEP 3. PAINT DEPTH INSPECTION

To check the thickness of the paint before machine polishing, a Paint Depth Gauge is used. A full report of the readings will also be provided to the owner to show the thickness before and after coating application.

STEP 4. PAINT CONDITION INSPECTION

An inspection light is then used to assess the paint defects and find a suitable pad and polish combination to improve gloss and remove swirl marks without being overly aggressive.

STEP 5. MACHINE POLISHING

The paintwork is then machine polished to remove the defects and enhance the gloss. The result is a mirror-finish which is ready to be locked in by the coating.

STEP 6. COATING PREPARATION

In order to remove any polishing oils, a panel wipe solution is used. This ensures that the surface is completely free from any residues to allow the ceramic coating to bond properly.

STEP 7. COATING APPLICATION

The Performance PPL 7-Year Ceramic Coating is then applied to the paint, glass, wheel faces, trim and exhaust. This provides an unparalleled level of protection against the elements.

STEP 8. TYRE CONDITIONER

To not only complete the freshly detailed look, but also to protect the rubber, a tyre conditioner is applied. This is not your typical shiny tyre gel, but a unique formulation which hydrates the rubber to keep it in excellent condition.

STEP 9. LEATHER SEALANT

To protect the leather against dye transfer, UV and friction, a leather sealant is applied. This allows the leather to breathe and keeps it soft and supple.

STEP 10. PLASTIC COATING

To provide 12-months of protection to the interior plastics against stains, spillages and UV-damage which causes fading, the Diamond ProTech interior coating is applied.
